The Dialogue featured key stakeholders from diverse perspectives assessing the opportunities and challenges with respect to access, use and ownership of land and resources in the context of efforts to mitigate climate change and reduce carbon emissions.

Economic growth in Latin America in recent decades has been based on a production structure built around the extraction and the export of natural resources. Economic integration policies have increased domestic and foreign investment, and new areas for the exploitation of renewable and non-renewable natural resources have been identified in order to expand and maintain the pace of economic growth.

The Dialogue addressed the opportunities and challenges presented by these development policies, and the different strategies to ensure that the rights of Indigenous Peoples, ethnic minorities and peasant communities are enhanced and protected. Initiatives from governments, private sector, investors, and community-based organizations were presented and discussed.
