IDLO with IGAD, RRI, RBM, and RECONCILE will co-convene a side event focusing on how rule of law solutions, combining inclusive governance, legal empowerment and access to justice—including through community-based dispute resolution—can contribute to the realization of the right to food in the rangelands through participatory and sustainable land use, land degradation neutrality, and stability.  

Anchored in the right to adequate food normative framework, this side event will explore the enabling role of legal empowerment and access to justice, with a particular focus on community-based dispute resolution mechanisms that address conflict between pastoralists and other rangeland users. These approaches can help strengthen governance systems, reduce tensions over land and natural resources, and support food security and resilience, particularly in fragile and food-insecure contexts.  

The event will contribute to joint learning and collective action on how rule of law approaches and community-based justice mechanisms can support sustainable land governance, peaceful societies, and the realization of the right to adequate food in the context of the UNCCD and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026.
