Background

In Mesoamerica, there is a growing interest in the new opportunities associated with REDD+.  Various stakeholders, including governments, have sought the inclusion of countries in various proposed REDD+ programs. In this context, Mesoamerica is at a particularly strategic crossroads for learning about the complexities arising from the implementation of REDD+ in highly differentiated situations. There is a real risk that the precarious progress on the rights of possession, use, management and enjoyment of forests may be reversed.  Efforts to strengthen rights and governance is not only possible but imperative for global goals on climate change, and to have positive impacts on forest communities. The Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) has promoted several international dialogues and regional level talks to explore the dimension of rights, tenure and forest governance and mitigation responses to climate change.  The Dialogues have contributed to creating global spaces for open discussion on issues of forests and climate change, with particular emphasis on the social (land tenure, governance, participation, and equity). With the negotiations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in limbo and with precedents from multilateral initiatives such as the Oslo Conference on Climate and Forests, action on REDD+ is moving on regional and national levels and with greater weight more quickly than ever.  

Objective

This regional RRI Dialogue for Mesoamerica will provide a space for frank and open discussion between decision makers and civil society organizations on critical issues of the role of forests in the climate change agenda, REDD+ mechanisms, and their implications for rights, tenure and territorial governance in Mesoamerica.  This event will be held in Spanish.
