Advocacy by the Association of Forest Communities of Petén persuaded the Guatemalan government to reclassify certain non-timber forest products into a new category, dramatically reducing high costs and bureaucratic burden on community organizations and individuals selling sustainably produced products like ramon and xate seeds. The Ministry of Environment’s revised list of non-timber forest products now allows members of 23 community organizations to access new markets and benefit from additional sources of income. Elsewhere in the country, forest users growing and harvesting non-timber forest products can also obtain a license in the new category. This project has further influenced national reform on the use of non-timber forest products.
