Much like the rest of the developing world, Colombian rural women face an uphill battle in the recognition of their land rights. Advocacy by Federación Departamental de Mujeres Campesinas de Cundinamarca and the Roundtable of Advocacy of Colombian Peasant Women (Mesa de Incidencia Política de las Mujeres Rurales Colombianas) has resulted in the Colombian government’s agreement to establish its first comprehensive public policy for rural women’s rights. The new policy provisions will not only clearly define the rights of rural women, they will also spell out the mechanisms to advance and implement these rights. This development will also propel the implementation of Law 731, a 2002 law that seeks to promote equity between rural men and women through women’s land titling, micro financing, and encouraging their representation in political processes.
