A new analysis by RRI highlights the relationship between protected areas and community land rights as a key global human rights and biodiversity conservation issue. The report, titled “Protected Areas and the Land Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities: Current Issues and Future Agenda” studied 21 highly biodiverse countries and found that while secure land and natural resource rights are fundamental to the identity, livelihoods and cultures of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, they have often been infringed in protected areas.
