For a decade, an informal network of forest agency leaders has worked to highlight the vital role of public forest governance in protecting the world’s forests. The Network, MegaFlorestais, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary (watch this video on its work). Its latest meeting on April 13-17 focused on combating deforestation and encouraging public forestry’s contribution to “green growth” – the much-talked about global alternative to traditional industrial economic growth. The group agreed to start a network of former MegaFlorestais leaders, and reaffirmed that the forum is a critically important opportunity for them to exchange and refresh perspectives in an informal setting. The meeting resulted in a series of new bilateral contacts between the participating countries.
