Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) offer a sustainable alternative to traditional forest uses, in addition to serving as a viable option for many women to pursue secure employment. In Mali, Sahel Eco has led advocacy initiatives aiming to develop a stronger NTFP industry for women. With a national agency for promoting NTFPs and their producers, neighboring Burkina Faso is a pioneer in this field. In July, women producers of NTFPs from Mali traveled to Burkina Faso to learn best practices and share industry experiences. They visited Burkina Faso’s Agency for the Promotion of NTFPs to discuss the development of a national strategy to support these women-led businesses and learn from the examples of successful business plans and financing models. Mali’s government is now partnering with Sahel Eco to help develop Mali’s national strategy for promoting NFTPs.
