The Rights and Resources Initiative and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) are jointly organizing the conference - Indian Forestry: Key Trends and Challenges on 5-6 March 2009 in New Delhi (India).

The Conference

This conference will assemble leading scholars who have been pivotal in tracking developments in India’s forest sector.  The conference will utilize this vast reservoir of knowledge and analytical skill to look critically at the trends that have shaped development in India’s forest sector over the last two decades and the underlying drivers of these trends. Equally important" it will provide an opportunity to understand the current state of affairs – key actors" institutions" legislations" politics and policies – and where they might lead to in the future.

The conference will use a number of think pieces prepared by attending scholars to unravel the interplay between factors that influence the direction of economic development" govern models of industrial development" determine status of human and civil rights" shape different conservation models" and sway policy responses. It is hoped that the combined learning from these think-pieces will aid in developing a new approach and strategy for the forest sector in India that harmonizes the security of forest ecosystems with the development aspirations of the poor.
