Sharing knowledge and increasing accessibility to land-related information and data is critical to increase transparency. Information on land governance disaggregated by gender is crucial for enabling developing and emerging economies to ensure a more equitable access to and control over land to women and men. 

To this end” the Land Portal” the global reference point for land related information on the internet” has integrated the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations Gender and Land Rights Database (GLRD) into the Land Portal webpages .  Information from the GLRD can now be accessed through the Land Portal country pages” displaying data on: total number of holders” women holders” number of holdings under co-ownership” and number of rural households headed by women.  To view an example of how the data has been integrated” visit:

Launched by the (FAO) in 2010″ the Gender and Land Rights Database highlights the major social” economic” political and cultural factors that influence the realization of women’s land rights throughout the world.  Produced in consultation with national statistics authorities” universities” civil society organisations and other sources” the database offers up-to-date information on how men and women in over 80 different countries differ in their legal rights and access to land.

The Database includes;        

Comprehensive land-related statistics on the total number of land holders” the total number of women land holders and the number of rural households headed by women.

Information on inheritance rules and regulations” as well as de facto practices.

Country level listings of civil society organizations and major institutions working on land-related issues.

An overview of the key international treaties and conventions pertinent to gender and land rights that have been signed and/or ratified at the country level.

 

This information is synthesised by FAO on the basis of international and national legislation relevant to women’s land rights” as well as figures from household surveys and agricultural census data. Definitions” sources and full and comparative reports can be found on the FAO website.

The FAO is a founding member of the Land Portal. The Land Portal is committed to providing country profiles with gender-disaggregated information and facilitating gender-receptive dialogue on land issues.

In addition to the Gender and Land Rights Database FAOLEX” the FAO’s database on food and agriculture legislation” and the FAO Corporate Document Repository have already been integrated into the platform. Databases from the World Bank” the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) are set to be integrated into the Land Portal in the near future.
