The English version of the Indonesian Constitutional Court's Decision regarding the 1999 Forestry Law is now available.

The decision states that customary forests of Indonesia are owned by Indigenous Peoples and not by the State. This is a major breakthrough as most states in the world consider forests as state property” despite the fact  that many of these forests have been claimed by Indigenous Peoples' long before the creation of the nation state.  This ruling has come about largely through the efforts of AMAN (Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara)” the local national coalition or federation of Indigenous Peoples' communities” with the support of many other NGOs.
