Prompted by the forced evictions of the Sengwer people from their ancestral territories, the Forest Peoples Program (FPP) coordinated a swift response in collaboration with the Katiba Institute, the Chepkitale Indigenous People’s Development Project, and the Sengwer Indigenous Peoples Project. They provided legal and capacity-building support to the victims, which helped the Sengwer understand their rights, reclaim their homes, and communicate their concerns to the government and the broader public. To date, 70 percent of the Sengwer have returned to Embobut Forest, and those who are aware of the legal injunction against evictions reportedly experience less harassment from authorities.
