A new report on industrial oil palm development explored the impacts of large-scale palm oil projects in Indonesia and Malaysia, and the lessons they hold for the industry’s more recent development in Liberia. The report pointed out that although Indonesia and Malaysia produce the majority of the world’s annual supply of palm oil, the industry only marginally contributes to GDP, and has not resulted in substantial pushing for the development of inclusive business models that prioritize the rights of communities, and estates to Africa.
