The Eleventh Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) Dialogue on Forests” Governance and Climate Change opened on the morning of 12 October 2011 in London” the United Kingdom (UK). Andy White” RRI Coordinator” opened the meeting” describing the Dialogue as an opportunity for constructive and candid conversations.
Morning panels addressed financing for forests and climate in the context of global crises” and how financing is reaching the ground” with perspectives from communities and indigenous peoples. On financing for forests and climate in the context of crises” panellists suggested the need to strengthen the evidence base for financing for forests” the need to recognize carbon as one component in an array of environmental services” and the importance of secure tenure. On financing reaching the ground” panellists focused on the tension between the rights and needs of communities of forest peoples” and that of their governments.
During the afternoon participants heard a presentation on behalf of Gregory Barker” Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change” UK” who said Rio+20 provided an opportunity to drive forward work on forests” combining efforts on REDD+ with private sector supply chain initiatives. The afternoon panel discussion focused on looking forward to Durban and beyond” discussing new approaches and next steps for reducing emissions and promoting livelihoods.
In the late afternoon” some participants attended the Forests” Governance and Climate Change Seminar chaired by UK MP Martin Horwood” at the House of Commons. Participants discussed the outcomes of the Dialogue” and heard a presentation by Stephen O’Brien” Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Development” UK.
