Location Name:
Virtual—on Zoom

Start and End Times:
9:00 - 10:30 a.m. ET

Hosted by Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) and coalition partners, this webinar aims to advance dialogue on the future of biodiversity conservation through community leadership, secure rights, and equitable financing. The event will serve as a strategic platform to connect the growing momentum around community-led conservation in Africa with global efforts to implement the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework, particularly Targets 3, 22, and 23. The webinar will also serve as a launch event for RRI’s forthcoming report, Advancing Rights-based and Community-led Conservation in Africa: Evidence, Lessons, and Recommendations.

RRI will bring together Indigenous and local community leaders, donors, conservation organizations, researchers, and development partners to examine the report’s findings, assess progress toward achieving rights-based conservation commitments, identify persistent gaps in implementation, and establish pathways for accountability and action.

By showcasing experiences from across sub-Saharan Africa—including community conservancies, community forests, locally managed marine areas, Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas, and customary governance systems—speakers will highlight community-driven conservation initiatives that demonstrate the effectiveness of local leadership, traditional knowledge, innovation, and stewardship in advancing biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable development goals.
