Forest Peoples Programme (FPP), the Center for People and Forests (RECOFTC), and the Samdhana Institute convened two regional workshops in Thailand and the Philippines to share lessons about the palm oil frontier, focusing on the expansion of the sector in South East Asia. The meetings revealed that the ‘land grabbing’ for large estates is primarily occurring in areas where land rights are weakly protected and law enforcement ineffective. Participants resolved to set up a regional network to monitor the palm oil frontier and advocate for a rights-based approach to the sector through statutory National Human Rights Commissions.
