A complaint by Forest Peoples Program (FPP) supporting local communities in Bomi and Grand Cape Country, Liberia successfully promoted a leading palm oil company to cease some of its operations. FPP raised a complaint to the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) against the allocation of local communities’ customary lands to Malaysian company, Sime Darby, for the establishment of a 10,000 ha and 15,000 ha oil palm plantation without their Free, Prior and Informed Consent. This violated the RSPO Principles and Criteria and the New Plantings Procedure. The complaint was successful in prompting Sime Darby to cease all operations on the aforementioned sites until bilateral discussions among affected parties take place. These wide-ranging bilateral discussions included representatives from affected communities, community representatives from other areas where future palm plantation investments are planned, UN representatives, a small group nominated by communities as their main negotiators, and senior Sime Darby managers from Malaysia and Liberia.
