In the last week a controversy has emerged in Uganda over the governmental project to turn over part of the Mabira Central Reserve Forest to a sugar company. Environmental groups have launched a campaign including online petitions and boycott of the sugar company to protest the plan. This project would do away with 7″100 ha of a biodiverse forest that would be degazetted and turned into a sugarcane plantation. Opponents argue that its impact on environment” tourism and economic development would be devastating. The government insists that no decision has yet been made” and that all stakeholders will have the opportunity to express their views before a possible give-away of the forest.
