RRI Partner Forest Peoples Programme(FPP) reports about the difficulties faced by forest dwellers in India.Their situation was supposed to improve after the adoption of a ForestRights Act last December” but its implementation has been delayed. Infact” evictions are taking place across the country” targetingindigenous people and treating them as encroachers on a wild land”while they have been inhabiting the forest for generations. Theseevictions prevent them from claiming the rights they are entitled tounder the new legislation. In the meantime” land grabbing and forceddeplacement to the benefits of corporations has intensified. All thesedevelopments have led to massive protests by forest dwellers and civilsociety representatives in India. They are demanding a stop to theeviction process” an amendment of the Forest Rights Act to correct itsshortcomings” and the enforcement of the rights the Act guarantees them.
