On February 28th and 29th” RRI and Peking University hosted a two-day international conference on tenure and regulatory reform in China. The event included participants from the State Forestry Administration” the National Forestry and Economics Development Research Center in China” and professors and researchers from a range of Chinese and international academic institutions.
The first set of available data on the impact of collective forest tenure reform in China was presented at the opening of the conference. Findings from this research were based on a collection of case studies conducted in 8 Chinese provinces and included:
- Differences in the proportion of tenure types in each province can be explained by the relaxation of national quotas and the emergence of village-level choice over forestland use and management strategies;
- A greater variety of management models (not just state or collective) and tenure types among villages and provinces has emerged; and
- Local choice over tenure type increases the amount household income that is generated in the forest industry.
