RRI Engagements at NY Climate Week 2025

RRI will host and participate in various events at Climate Week New York City 2025 (NYCW). We will promote the role of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and local communities in the climate field. As COP30 approaches, this is a critical moment to show that these communities have important knowledge and experiences that should be included in the climate space.
Below is the list of events hosted by RRI.
Tuesday, September 23
Interlaken Group Meeting
When: 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. ET
Where: Closed session
What: This meeting will convene leaders and investors from companies, implementation partners, and rightsholder communities to identify and advance concrete, landscape-level opportunities for collaboration between the private sector and Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and local communities in key sourcing and investment landscapes.

Workshop on Pooled Fund Feasibility for Rightsholders Engaging with Nature-based Markets
When: 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. ET
Where: Closed session
What: This is a technical meeting to review the findings of a feasibility study for a pooled funding mechanism to provide legal and technical support to communities impacted by nature-based markets. The workshop will stress test potential financing models, discuss potential pilots, and consider how the fund can respond to both community needs and private sector priorities.

Path to Scale Meeting
When: 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. ET
Where: Closed session
Who: RRI and Rainforest Foundation Norway
What: This is a technical meeting that will present the new Path to Scale Funding Dashboard report. There will also be a screening of a documentary that celebrates RRI’s two decades of advocating for change in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and local communities.

From Grazing Lands to Global Goals: Elevating Indigenous Pastoralist’s Knowledge in Shaping Nature-Based Solutions

What:This event will highlight the vital role of Indigenous pastoralist knowledge in advancing nature-based solutions. It will showcase community-led adaptation strategies, biodiversity stewardship, and ethical carbon governance rooted in lived experience. Pastoralist leaders will present locally-driven climate solutions to global investors and high-level policymakers. The dialogue aims to shape future policies and investments that strengthen Indigenous-led action on climate and biodiversity.

Guardians of the Earth: Collective Protection for Climate Justice
When: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ET

Who: RRI, Amazon Watch, and ALLIED
What: Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendant Peoples discuss the importance of community-based collective protection measures for defending community territory and protecting threatened ecosystems.

Ethnic-Racial Justice and Climate Justice: The importance of recognizing Afro-descendant peoples and communities in Latin America and the Caribbean at COP30
When: 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. ET
Where: Closed session
Who: RRI, Ford Foundation, and CITAFRO
What: This event will cover how governments, donors, and COP30 negotiators can recognize Afro-descendant Peoples as collective subjects of rights and ensure their full inclusion in climate commitments. It will also raise the awareness of the Decade for People of African Descent and Afro-descendant Peoples’ role in climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.

Implementation of the Brazzaville Declaration: Commitment and Partnership for the Recognition and Protection of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in the World’s Tropical Forest Basins
When: 6:15 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. ET
Where: Closed session
Who: RRI, UN Secretariat, Republic of the Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso, and Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC)
What: The main objective of this side event is to advocate with states and UN organizations to take into account the key concerns of Indigenous Peoples and local communities as outlined at the First World Congress.
The aim is to acquire the support and commitment of world leaders to:
- Recognize, protect, and guarantee the land rights and land tenure systems of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
- Protect Indigenous and local community leaders as well as their lands and territories.
- Ensure inclusion in all decision-making affecting their lives and ecosystems, in particular through respect for free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC).
- Respect and give consideration to the knowledge, science, traditional practices, and innovations of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
- Recognize and guarantee free access to direct funding for Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
