On January 17, 2023, RRI launched its next five-year Strategic Plan and presented key findings of the Blue Skies Thinking process, a remarkable coalition-wide listening exercise carried out in 2022. We were honored to co-host this dialogue in collaboration with our long-time supporter, the Embassy of Sweden.

Background

RRI undertakes a collective process every five years to define its Coalition’s strategy. The development of its 5-year Strategic Program is a collective, inclusive process based on inputs from Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendants Peoples, including the women within these groups, and other allies and experts.

As part of the process to develop this Strategic Program, we consulted with over 100 leaders of grassroots networks in 22 countries, representing the voices of Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and local community men, women, and youth. These participants spoke of their hopes, fears and dreams for securing and realizing their rights to lands, forests, resources and territories. RRI documented the common threads from these testimonies, which will be shared at this event.

The half-day hybrid discussion brought together people from diverse backgrounds, including a panel of Indigenous, Afro-descendant and local community rightsholders, multilateral institutions, conservation organizations, the private sector, donors and NGOs. It presented a unique opportunity to listen to innovative ideas for strengthening and building new partnerships to shape rights-based conservation and development in 2023 and beyond.
