India has established an ambitious agenda for industrial and infrastructure development, requiring a substantial amount of land. At the same time, land and resource conflicts have escalated in India in recent years and are widely reported in the media. It is projected that around 11 million hectares of land will be required for such projects in the next 15 years.
The workshop, Analyzing Land Conflict and Investment Risks in India, aims to identify better solutions to resolving land conflicts using new data from two groundbreaking studies:
- The Land Conflict Watch, undertaken by independent researchers in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences, identifies over 300 land-related conflicts involving infrastructure, energy and power, and industrial development projects. The study examines the pervasiveness of land-related conflict involving private and common lands. An interactive map indicating the nature of land conflicts will be launched at the workshop alongside key findings and recommendations for reducing conflict.
- The Analysis of Stalled Investment Projects examines nearly 100 industrial, infrastructure, and energy projects in depth for further insights into foregone investments and other repercussions to the larger economy. Lead researchers will present key findings, maps, and graphics that will help in formulating risk assessment and mitigation strategies to deal with land-related issues, and a case for better regulatory screens.
A panel of experts representing industry, government, and civil society will discuss and debate the findings and recommendations presented in the two studies. The audience will represent industry, financial and regulatory institutions, leading multinational companies and investors, economic and financial analysts, and civil society organizations working with local communities.
