The Dialogues on Forests, Governance and Climate Change, organized by the Rights and Resources Initiative, are designed to foster critical reflection and learning on forest governance, the rights of forest communities and Indigenous Peoples, and forest tenure in the context of global action to combat climate change. 

 

This fifth Dialogue focused on three themes:

 

1. Taking stock of the decisions taken in the Oslo Climate and Forest Conference, the recent UNFCCC sessions in Bonn, the Cochabamba Summit — assessing their implications for local people, governance, and potential for fairly and effectively dealing with climate change;
2. Assessing the experience to date of key implementation issues, including dealing with the drivers of deforestation and tough governance challenges; 
3. Reviewing the status of progress towards a coherent framework of standards, safeguards and recourse mechanisms across the REDD arena, and in particular assessing the policy implications of the recommendations from a recent RRI workshop on the topic.

 

 

Participants and panelists will be asked to reflect on recent events, identify major issues, and find opportunities to protect the rights and interests of local peoples while moving towards effective climate change mitigation.  The meeting will close with a discussion on next steps at COP-16 that will ensure that REDD funds are spent effectively and promote better forest governance.
