In July 2018, following the RSPO CP’s rejection of GVL appeal, and GVL’s subsequent withdrawal from the RSPO, the CSO OPWG was forced to adapt quickly and change some of the activities without straying from the spirit and overall objective of the SRM. Widespread consciousness-raising was conducted at target counties to make community members aware of their rights in the areas that GVL is working. At the national level, a campaign was conducted to raise awareness with government institutions about CSO work in the oil palm sector, and the realities for communities on the ground. Frank conversations with key actors resulted in requests from government entities for more information on the sector, including, a request from the Ministry of Agriculture (chair of the oil palm technical working group) for a review of the concession agreement between GVL and the government of Liberia.
