It can be thought of as the way people and communities agree to organize, live and operate together. Each community and territory\u2019s unique history, culture, context, wisdom, struggles, and ways of life influence their structures and power dynamics (ways power is organized or shared, both openly\/overtly or informally\/covertly). Local governance dynamics determine how and what can emerge and be sustained within a territory\/community. Community governance structures can also be greatly affected by external legal and political factors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The governance structure (and the way it is created) influences what livelihoods can emerge and develop. The how is extremely important, for example: who is involved, who makes decisions, what alliances can be made, how the money or income distributed, etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is no universal \u201cright way\u201d to set up governance, as it must be created from the norms and existing practices in a specific community. This module will not share a definitive list of governance models. Instead, here are various case studies and voices to reflect on governance and power structures, and we will discuss more about your contexts in our live sessions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n         \r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-title-solid\" id=\"block_f896584936a906298689f4ec1fa458a7\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n        <div class=\"content\">\r\n            <h2 class=\"title\">What Is \u201cSocial Capital\u201d?<\/h2> \r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n \r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-copy-text\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n                    <div class=\"block-copy-text__content\">\r\n                <div class=\"text\"><p>When referring specifically to \u00a8social capital\u00a8 within the framework of Livelihoods, <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1bF6LUjCUleyh_NMyW5u614w8vrtTc3Ht\/view?usp=sharing\">Norman Rodea<\/a> invites us to respond to some of the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do organized social groups exist within the community? What are the existing groups?\n<ul>\n<li>What are the power dynamics and the relationship within the existing groups?<\/li>\n<li>How are conflicts addressed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What is the community decision-making structure like, does it work or not work?\n<ul>\n<li>What are the external pressures that generate tension in the community?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Who are resourceful people and institutions outside of the community that can benefit livelihood initiatives? For example: government officials, businesses, civil society organizations, public services.\n<ul>\n<li>What kind of economic markets are available?<\/li>\n<li>What powerful actors (within and outside) of the community align with the community values and goals?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n         \r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-title-solid\" id=\"block_2650abcfb9310ac4e330e9d7c0af87e7\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n        <div class=\"content\">\r\n            <h2 class=\"title\">Power Dynamics And Polarities: How To Navigate Tensions?<\/h2> \r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n \r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-copy-text\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n                    <div class=\"block-copy-text__content\">\r\n                <div class=\"text\"><p>Many of the power dynamics that surface when we discuss organizing and governance structures reflect both internal and external tensions or opposing forces at play within communities.\u00a0 Below, we present an initial list of these tensions and invite you to reflect on how they take shape in your community in relation to livelihood ideas or initiatives you\u2019ve been considering.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcesofinsight.com\/the-polarity-framework-solve-problems-manage-dilemmas\/\">polarities framework<\/a> invites you to hold these tensions, seeking ways to leverage them and include the wisdom of both sides, countering the danger of getting carried away with imposing one extreme over the other. The invitation is not \u201cone thing versus the other\u201d, but \u201cone thing and also the other\u201d, and to ask oneself: \u201cHow can these polarities be leveraged? In response to the need for local and sustainable income, the town developed four main communal businesses: sustainable forestry, a stone materials company, ecotourism, and a water bottling plant. These ventures create jobs, boost the economy, and fund social projects. &#8220;The communal businesses help us maintain our autonomy, as state and federal resources are very limited,&#8221; says Miguel Mart\u00ednez (chair of a community council). Governance relies on communal assemblies and the Council of Elders, preserving traditional practices.
