Additionally, you will identify and categorize key human and natural assets in your territory that are essential for supporting livelihood development.<\/p>\n<\/div> \n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div> \n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-title-solid\" id=\"block_f1d68ada0b3eef3c28b933b4bf427db7\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n        <div class=\"content\">\r\n            <h2 class=\"title\">Case Study: Indigenous Zen\u00fa Turn To Ancestral Seeds, Agroecology To Climate-Proof Their Farming. <\/h2> \r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n \r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-copy-text\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n                    <div class=\"block-copy-text__content\">\r\n                <div class=\"text\"><p>From the article: <\/p>\n<p>The climate crisis has given new meaning to the traditional food system. \u201cFor us, recovering our ancestral system is an urgency right now,\u201d says Daniela Miranda, 25, a resident and an agricultural engineering student. Her family is involved in an agroforestry project that will plant 18 hectares (44 acres) of land with native species to regenerate La Mojana\u2019s soil.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges they are facing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0lack of land and water resources<\/li>\n<li>narcotrafficking<\/li>\n<li>the presence of armed groups<\/li>\n<li>extensive grazing<\/li>\n<li>contamination<\/li>\n<li>monoculture plantations<\/li>\n<li>flood and other climate impacts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite these challenges their community is developing important projects to protect their traditional food systems. Farmers and seed custodians are working with the Association of Organic Agriculture and Livestock Producers (ASPROAL) and their Communitarian Seed House (Casa Comunitaria de Semillas Criollas y Nativas). Today, 25 families are involved in sharing, storing and commercializing the seeds of 32 rare or almost-extinct varieties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking together helps us to save, share more seeds, and sell at fair price [while] avoiding intermediaries and increasing families\u2019 incomes\u2026Last year, we sold 8 million seeds to organic restaurants in Bogot\u00e0 and Medell\u00edn.\u201d Remberto Gil (Indigenous Zen\u00fa farmer).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the climate crisis, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adaptation-undp.org\/projects\/scaling-climate-resilient-water-management-practices-vulnerable-communities-la-mojana-0\">more floods<\/a> in La Mojana,\u201d says Carlos Gonzalez, a biologist at the University of C\u00f3rdoba University in Monter\u00eda, who works on agroecology in La Mojana\u2019s wetland area. \u201cWe are losing crops because they rot and we always have a delay in sowing times,\u201d says farmer Marta Primera Acevedo. Residents can\u2019t sow other crops like corn and beans until the water recedes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the challenges, Miranda says the farmers will always find ways to adapt to climate change: \u201cUsing ancestral seeds means adaptation to our specific land or weather condition. Coming back to them is an urgent need.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n         \r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-title-solid\" id=\"block_b576cd4a915c70d1b976f5e39d357ec5\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n        <div class=\"content\">\r\n            <h2 class=\"title\">Case Study: Women in Brazil Overcoming Threats, Forced Evictions And Land Grabbing <\/h2> \r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n \r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n<section class=\"block-copy-text\" data-waypoint=\".25\">\r\n    <div class=\"container medium\">\r\n                    <div class=\"block-copy-text__content\">\r\n                <div class=\"text\"><p>The women collectors and breakers of babassu nuts were locked out of their harvesting territories by violent landowners. To fight back for the right to access the babassu trees, they came together to form an inter-state movement of the \u201cQuebradeiras de Baba\u00e7u\u201d (babassu breakers). Their efforts resulted in the \u201cFree Babassu Law\u201d that guarantees free access to the babassu trees by the women that collect the nuts. The law allowed them to do long-term planning within\u00a0 women associations, buying equipment and commercializing the babassu products. The story\u00a0 focuses on the challenges these youths face in the city, such as cultural disconnection, employment difficulties, and a longing for their traditional way of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The short film captures the transformative journey these young people undergo as they decide to return to their communities.
