deCOALonize

Kenya’s green and just future is at risk. Coal remains a looming threat to derail the country’s climate commitments, environmental protections, and the rights of its people. Communities in Lamu and Kitui are in the frontline of the fight against this setback. The Now or Never campaign, led by the deCOALonize coalition, calls for an end to coal in Kenya—starting with the rejection of a court appeal that could reinstate a license for the Lamu coal plant, and the revocation of coal mining concessions in Kitui. This is not just about energy—it’s about sustainable development, environmental justice and community rights.

A Landmark Victory Under Threat

In 2019, Kenya’s National Environment Tribunal revoked the license for a 1,050MW coal-fired power plant proposed by Amu Power Company Limited in the shores of Lamu, citing lack of proper consultation and severe environmental concerns. Five years later, in 2024, the company filed arguments appealing that ruling, opening the door for reversal.

When Profit Threatens Rights

The coal plant threatens constitutional rights: a clean and healthy environment, protection of cultural heritage, and access to sustainable livelihoods. A win for Amu Power could reopen the door to coal in Lamuand reinforce mining interests in Kitui, where coal concessions are already in place.
